Nasal maxillofacial fracture

Many a time, fractures in the human body occur in the nasal and maxillofacial area. The maxillofacial area is the one which relates to the jaws and surrounding portions. When a person, unfortunately meets with an accident or gets into a fight, the portions most likely to get injured are the nose and mouth. Because both of these portions protrude in the human body and there is a high chance that we fall off using these places as a support. The fractures in these areas are extremely common, especially amongst sportsmen.

Overview of the surgery

  • For a nasal fracture, a person can easily get Rhinoplasty done. This is a method to change the anatomy of the nasal area for better cosmetic appearance as well as recovery.
  • There are two major kinds of Rhinoplasty- open and closed. In the open one, the surgeon makes an incision in the columella which joins the nostrils. In the closed one, all the procedures are performed inside the nose without any incisions.
  • For nasal fractures, the doctors try to push back the septum to get the desired results of setting the nasal bones back into place.
  • Maxillofacial repairs require MMF which stands for Mandibulo Maxillary Fixation. Initially, anesthesia is given to the patient. MMF is useful for restoring the normal position of the maxilla. After this, the repair of all the areas in the maxillofacial areas is carried out. MMF screws prove vital in restoring the structure.

There are many ways of getting a nasal and maxillofacial repair done. It does not have to be dependent on surgical methods only, but if the symptoms are prolonged, surgeries are mandatory.
