Stapedectomy

image of stapedectomy Stapedectomy is a type of surgery, which is performed in the middle ear. There are small bones which are extremely important when it comes to reflecting sound in the ear. These are malleus, incus and stapes. If stapes is damaged or harmed in some way, then Stapedectomy is performed to set everything right. Stapes can be damaged primarily due to two diseases. These include Otosclerosis and the other one is congenital malformation.

Symptoms:

Ostosclerosis is a disease that is hereditary. It is the growth of an extra bone on and around the Stapes.

  • Decreased hearing.
  • Tinnitus
  • Diagnosis is done by doing Puretone Audiometry and Timpanometry.
Causes:
  • The main cause of Ostosclerosis has not been figured out yet and doctors are still trying to find it out.
  • But, there have been certain observations made and the bad news is that this disease is hereditary. It also affects more women than it affects men.
  • It is also said that out of all the races, Caucasians develop this disease the most and it starts in middle age when the person has passed his adulthood.
  • Congenital malformation is also a congenital disease.
Overview of the surgery:

Stapedectomy is very different from Stapedectomy. The former is preferred over the latter and has a higher success rate as well.

  • In stapedotomy, there is a small incision made in the ear canal.
  • The canal skin is elevated. The bone is curetted.
  • A small fenestra (window) is made in the stapes foot plate.
  • Following this, prosthesis (an additional support) is placed in the fenestra and the upper end is hooked on to the incus bone.
  • The stapes supra structure is removed and the hearing is checked.
  • This process has a very high success rate and one of the most rewarding surgeries.
  • The prosthesis helps the patient bring back mobility to the stapes which is primarily lost due to osteosclerosis. Even those patients who have never had stable stapes are able to recover from that problem.
  • The hearing quality is improved immensely after carrying out this surgery. This operation is also safer than Stapedectomy.
  • These days, laser Stapedectomy is also practiced in which a carbon dioxide laser is used. The laser creates precise hole in the stapes and does not increase the temperature of the ear fluid. The operation takes one day for materialization and then it becomes easy to recover from any sort of post-operative problem.

This is a very safe surgery, but it’s highly dependent on the doctor’s skill. It helps in improving hearing loss and is better than most other surgeries.
